Local Guide for Restaurants, Hotels, Cafes and more

  • We start Friday evening with Semenawa Research Meeting #16 - Gote Shibari. This SRM will be presented by Rigger Odys from Kinbaku Odyssey Studio in Virginia and VioletRain from Bound Lark Rope Studio in Maryland.

They will discuss the emotional and physical roles that Gote shibari plays between two partners.

The discussion will dive into evolution of Gote shibari in prominent Japanese kinbaku styles using historical notes from Showa Era bondage to modern times. We will break down the elements of Gote shibari that progressively mix hard and soft skills to make tying hands behind the back an experience. The discussion will be followed by a tying demo that will emphasize various discussed aspects of the Gote shibari.

The unique and intimate nature of this meeting would allow participants to discuss, observe and ask questions throughout the meeting, as well as taking photos from various vantage points during the tying demo.

SRM is inspired by Naka sensei’s semenawa study group in Tokyo and held in the US with his blessing.

  • Saturday Morning we will reconvene for a full day Gote Lab with Odys, Violet, and Paige

In this one-day workshop we will study fundamental techniques for iconic two-rope Naka style Gote shibari (tying hands behind the back).

The goal of the workshop is to improve accessibility of the Gote shibari to fit any body in a safe manner.

In particular we will focus on:

-safety considerations and ways to mitigate compression on the arms and hands.

    -setting/placing hands behind the back

-tying wrist cuff or split cuff if hands cannot be fully crossed behind the back

-placing ropes on the arms to reduce nerve compression

-wrapping each rope with reverse and forward tensions

-setting appropriate kanuki tension in the second rope

-finishing both ropes in clean and creative ways.

-adding the suspension line and testing how the tied Gote fits under tension

Depending on the skill level of the class we may also add third and fourth ropes to the base two-rope Gote shibari as needed to further improve the fit (e.g. hyper mobility)

    Prerequisites:

For all participants: Solid shibari fundamentals

For tops: Directional square knots, reverse and forward tension, single column tie, x-friction, upline handling

For bottoms: Basic safety in understanding and familiarity with their top as a tying partner
